( CHARACTER INFORMATION )

Name/Work Name: Zoë Hange, “Sawney”.
Canon: Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin
Canon Point: After the torture session with Levi.
AU/CRAU: N
Age: ~It is a mystery~. Probably late 20's to early 30s.
History: [Wiki] – Please note that I'm taking a cue from the anime and playing Hange as a woman.

Personality: If the world inside the walls has crack, you can bet your top dollar someone thinks Hange is smoking it. “Eccentric” is a word that describes her perfectly; even among the oddballs of the Survey Corps, she sticks out as a weirdo. One of the biggest reasons for this is Hange's love of titans. Where others fear and hate them –and reasonably so!-- Hange just adores titans. A lot. A disturbing amount, one might say. She loves to study them, she loves to talk about them, she loves interacting with them, she even seems to enjoy killing them!

...Well, that last one is almost normal. In fact, Hange used to hate them like everyone else. And then she kicked the head of one after decapitating it and realized that head was so much lighter than it should be. And then it occurred to her- something so big and malformed shouldn't be able to stand properly. Upon realizing this mystery, Hange decided to love titans. That's the sort of person she is; when she dedicates herself fully to something, she really goes all the way. Her affection for titans as “something to be understood” instead of “something to be hated” shows in the way she tries to talk to them despite knowing they won't talk back, reassures them despite their lack of understanding, and cries and screams when she injures them for science. Oh, and she feels pretty bad when she goes too far and kills them. The way a child might feel awful after stomping on a goldfish and realizing that was too much and it's dead now.

But Hange's fondness for titans doesn't mean she's lost sight of what they are. She never hesitates to kill them if they can't be contained; in fact, it almost seems like a game to her, the way she zips around saying things like “Yahoo!” and “Don't worry, I promise this won't hurt!”. Her enthusiasm for both understanding and eliminating titans crosses into sheer recklessness quite a few times, though she always demonstrates an ability to protect herself and those around her in the end. She's carefree, but certainly nowhere near careless.

And that chipper, upbeat, energetic attitude she has toward titans isn't exclusive in any way; Hange shows that same cheerful friendliness toward her fellow human beings just as readily. Indeed, she gets along with everyone she meets, even if they don't necessarily want to get along with her. Even Pastor Nick, who Hange threatened quite seriously to kill at one point, became a fond friend of hers. She has the honor of being one of the very, very few people Erwin trusts completely, and even has a strong enough bond with Levi that she can “translate” his meaning when he talks about shit. True friendship is being able to decipher a literal crap code, or something like that. Her compassion is a natural, honest thing; she is even kind to Eren, treating him like a friend while others were terrified or untrusting of him. Although it is Hange's job to study him, she never once acts as though he is a mere experiment, always talking to him like he is another person and not simply a freak.

Of course, this isn't to say that Hange has earned the respect and friendship of those around her simply because she's got a lot of charm. Even if she weren't the only one willing to do what she does, there'd be no denying she's the best for it. Aside of her enthusiasm and love for her work, Hange is, in a word, brilliant. A scientist to the very core, she happily risks her life and makes herself love titans for one reason; knowledge to help humanity win. Her research is extensive and key to finding out several facts about the truth surrounding titans in the series, but titans aren't the only field in which Erwin makes use of her talents. She's also a keen inventor and strategist, designing many of the traps and devices used by the Survey Corps. It is Hange who developed the means and equipment to begin trapping titans alive without suffering any human losses, and it is Hange who figures out how to best put what they learn about titans to use.

That conniving mind, passion, and cleverness also come in handy when it's time for Erwin to play his political games. Hange knows what he's up to and what he suspects and she supports him with everything she has. Her manipulation of the two military policemen responsible for Nick's death show her cunning, and she has an understanding of human nature that she has no trouble using to her advantage.

And, simply put, Hange is not without her flaws. Her recklessness nearly gets her killed or injured with disturbing frequency. Not only that, be she's bull-headed and stubborn, refusing to see reason during those rare times when she does lose her temper. In one example of such behavior, Hange nearly gets a companion killed and then complains at him for getting in the way. In another, she nearly throws a man off Wall Sina to his death because he refuses to talk. And in yet another, she and Levi torture a man brutally as payback for his having tortured a friend of hers. She's shockingly violent with titans, coming up with all manner of cruel ways to test their regenerative abilities.

Not that Hange is a violent monster, or any such thing. She does express guilt and horror at her actions when she goes too far, or at the very least, understands what she needs to do with a grim sort of determination. Hange deeply values human life, and as with Levi and Erwin, she will sacrifice a little of her own humanity for the sake of others. In fact, under all of those quirks that make her who she is, Hange can be extremely serious, giving a glimpse of how deeply she cares about what's going on around her and how committed she is to change. It's just that this side of Hange isn't one normally seen by others.

And in the end, that's probably a good thing; the silly, personable Hange who rarely loses her temper and keeps her calm in battles is an irreplaceable asset to the Survey Corps, and her behavior often takes some of the tension out of the situation. She's crazy and childish and sometimes downright creepy, but she does her best and gives off such an air of sincerity that it's difficult to not like and trust her. Even if working for her can be exasperating.

And don't make the mistake of letting her think you're invested in her research. Intelligent men will run at the first sign that she's about to drop an info bomb, which just happens to be one of her favorite things!

Debt: Hange will be wishing for the safety of humans (including Erwin!) in her world.
Suitability: Frankly, like the rest of the Survey Corps, Hange would try anything to save humanity. If that means serving a witch for the rest of her life, she'll gladly do it. And I do mean gladly; she's a bit screwy in the head, so expect her to get obnoxiously excited over spirits. She needs something to obsess over in the absence of titans, after all!

Previous Game Info: Nada.

Inventory: Her uniform, both pairs of glasses (do I assume she gets to keep these because she needs them?), a notebook filled with her research notes, and her 3D maneuver gear.

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Hange is a completely normal, if entirely weird, human being. She has undergone training as a soldier, which includes some hand to hand combat, use of firearms, general physical fitness, and use of 3 Dimensional Maneuver Gear. The 3DMG is a piece of equipment that attached at the hips with the use of various belts over the body to keep it in place. It contains steel wires used to latch on to surfaces so that the user can “fly” and attack titans with the blades that come with the device. Hange is particularly proficient, having the skill to be a Survey Corps squad leader, and later Commander.

Of course, that isn't the only reason Hange is qualified for these positions. She's the brains of the operation; on the stat charts her Wisdom stat is literally up to 11 on a 0-10 scale. She's as clever and intuitive as Erwin, easily scheming when she has to and also applying her knowledge to other areas, such as invention and research. Simply stated, it could be said that Hange is the genius scientist of the group.

But the same fearlessness and creativity that fuel Hange's strengths can also be considered weaknesses, as she has them in overwhelming abundance. In fact, she is downright reckless, just barely escaping death countless times because she's too overeager. Hange doesn't like to take no for an answer, and has put other lives in danger for her own whims at least once-- though it seems she did learn from that mistake. And while her enthusiasm for learning about titans is a great asset to the cause, it also makes her downright weird, eccentric, and nerve-wracking for others to approach. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that working in her squad is rather a lot like babysitting.
